QuDoS multiple sclerosis: NHS case studies 2019 Outstanding MS physiotherapist commendation

Sarah Brenton Dorset Healthcare University NHS Foundation Trust

Sarah initially worked in the field of neurological rehabilitation. In 2004, she specialised as an MS physiotherapist supporting patients with relapsing and remitting MS at the Dorset MS service. She later began work with the Community Neurology Service supporting a caseload of over 300 patients. Sarah has since driven the development of a spasticity clinic supporting all aspects of spasticity management, including focal muscle injections. She is an expert in 24-hour postural management, ensuring patients have optimal seating solutions, sleep systems and standing aids. Sarah advocates for MS patients by teaching, training and supervising clinicians from other teams, helping to ensure best practice. She has worked collaboratively to deliver a spasticity study day, organising the programme and running the workshop to pass specialist neurological skills onto other healthcare professionals. She has also recently extended her role to ‘Advanced Neurological Practitioner’, utilising the skills and experience developed working in a specialist neurological multidisciplinary team.
